On 19 September, I will attempt to complete the 100-kilometre Madrid–Segovia race, a challenging course that takes runners from Madrid to Segovia through the Sierra de Guadarrama.
Running 100 kilometres is a huge personal challenge for me. But this time, I have a reason to run that is much more important than simply reaching Segovia.
My sons, Andrés and Miguel, are 25 and 23 years old, and both have Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP), a rare, inherited and progressive neurological condition that affects mobility and gradually makes something as simple as walking increasingly difficult.
Living with HSP has taught me that behind every diagnosis there is a person, a family and many questions for which we still do not have answers. It has also taught me that moving forward, even slowly, is still moving forward.
That is why I want to turn these 100 kilometres into something more than a personal challenge.
I want to run for Andrés and Miguel, and for everyone living with HSP.
I want every kilometre to help raise awareness of a condition that is still largely unknown and, above all, to help raise funds for research, support and services for people affected by HSP and their families.
All funds raised through this challenge will go to AEPEF, the Spanish Association for Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia, an organisation working to improve the quality of life of people living with HSP, support their families and promote research that could one day change their future.
100 kilometres may seem like an enormous distance. But when you have a reason to run them, every kilometre has a purpose.

La Asociación Española de Paraparesia Espástica Familiar (AEPEF), es una Organización no Gubernamental sin ánimo de lucro que tiene como fin agrupar a enfermos y familiares para potenciar la investigación y sensibilizar a la opinión pública sobre esta enfermedad rara o de baja incidencia pero con efectos que causan deficiencias motoras que pueden llegar a ser invalidantes en las personas que la padecen dando a conocer esta patología y su problemática psicosocial a todos los niveles sociales y políticos.
