The environment is the most essential part of the people in Msitu wa Tembo and Londoto since it directly affects their daily life in infrastructures and the Agriculture sector. In the past three years, there have been re-occurring floods in the communities that affected the farms near the river, the main road leading to the villages was destroyed and buried in water also the destruction of livelihoods. A lot of resources are needed each year to help the communities affected, recover from these environmental hazards.

At TATU project we fight to find solutions to these problems. Tree planting will help restore the environment, mitigate the effects of soil erosion and environmental degradation, for now, and in the future. That is why we emphasize “TreesforourFuture”. You can be part of these initiatives by taking action to support our campaign.

About Us

TATU Project was founded in 2013, In 2014 TATU Project conducted a baseline survey in the community of Msitu wa Tembo and Londoto and came up with 5 major problem areas which are Health, Water, education, Environment, and marginalization. The Green Project: Environment program was established to mitigate the effects of environments such as floods (river overflow), degradation, soil erosion and encourage proper waste management.

The project focuses on conserving the environment, planting trees in schools and community areas, providing training and seminars on environmental conservation, and proper ways to dispose of waste in the community.

How did the project start?

With this background, in 2020 TATU project launched a new environmental initiative- Tree planting that aimed to mitigate the effects of climate change and environmental hazards in the community areas. The project involved the mobilization of school environment clubs and community environment sensitization.

The school environment project was pioneered as the center for tree planting initiatives through environment clubs. The project established and developed a school trees nursery where trees are planted for later distribution to the schools and community.

Tree planting helps restore the environment, mitigating the effects of soil erosion and environmental degradation, not just for the present but also for the future benefits. That is why we emphasize #TreesforourFuture and through mobilizing the students from primary and secondary schools we are building a generation that will understand the importance of trees and benefit from them.

Your support can help enable the Green project to plant trees in the areas and mitigate serious environmental and climate issues that affect the rural people of Msitu wa Tembo and Londoto in Northern Tanzania. For our “TreesforourFuture” campaign, our goal is to plant over 10,000 trees at the river bank per year, 300 trees in each school, and over 1000 trees in the community. Also, to provide seminars about the environment with the aim of developing a community that is aware of, and concerned about, the environment and its associated problems, such are floods, soil erosion, and soil infertility, and which has the knowledge, skills, and commitment to work individually and collectively towards solutions of current environmental problems attacking the community. Will you help us?

Why give to the tree planting initiative in the rural part of Northern Tanzania?

The 2014 baseline survey and 2017 Agriculture research conducted by TATU Project discovered several problems;

  • TATU project Agriculture research indicates soil fertility as one of the key problems affecting people of Msitu wa Tembo and Londoto. Soil fertility is important since over 43% of the population are farmers and the rest are a mixture of entrepreneurs, livestock keepers, and farmers.
  • Seasonal heavy rains cause the river to flood which contributes to soil erosion
  • Less awareness concerning environmental issues and how it affects infrastructures and the Agriculture activities which is the backbone of the community income.

Both surveys found that there is a big problem of floods/ river overflow that destroy their crops each year. This flood also leaves new unplanned valleys inside the community that destroys existing infrastructures including the main road to the community.

The “TreesforourFuture” campaign seeks to restore the environment, mitigating the effects of soil erosion and environmental degradation, not just for the present but also for the future benefits of the people of msitu wa Tembo and Londoto in rural areas of northern Tanzania. These trees will provide for better soil for agriculture, a source of fresh air, shades, and a source of renewable energy.

The objectives are:

  • Restore the environment by mitigating the effects of soil erosion caused by floods from the river overflow that affects the land, infrastructures, and socio-economic activities of the community members.
  • Decrease environmental and land degradation by providing school and community seminars on how to conserve the environment.
