In October I am taking part in the Sierra Leone Marathon for the 9th time, this time in the city of Bo. Through this event, I am raising funds for the charity Street Child España to keep children safe, in school and learning.
Over the last decade, great strides have been made in the education of children in rural Sierra Leone, thanks in large part to the tireless efforts of Street Child. The massive cuts to international aid budgets by several western governments is seriously jeopardising this progress. So, with your assistance I would like to make a small contribution to supporting Street Child´s ambitious plans to give all children of Sierra Leone the opportunity to go to school. The ability to read, write and have a good grasp of arithmetic is essential to achieving good outcomes in so many aspects of their lives.
Just to add a bit of spice, I am going to attempt to set a new cricket world record whilst simultaneously taking part in the Sierra Leone Marathon. The record I am looking to set is for the longest run up of a bowler in a game of cricket. Wearing full cricket whites and carrying a cricket ball I will jog the half marathon course, then jog the 5km course at the end of which I will deliver the first ball in a game of cricket, hence delivering the ball after a 26km run up.
What does Street Child do?
Seeks out the most disadvantaged, hardest to reach children and seeks to get them into a safe environment, in school and learning. To achieve this it:- Builds schools, trains teachers, supports families to earn an income to support their children and keep them in school, supports communities in maintaining the school and paying the teachers. Supports children displaced as a result of natural disaster or conflict. Street Child works with local partners, managed and staffed by local people to deliver those projects.
During my visit to Sierra Leone, I will visit rural schools to meet the children and teachers and also visit businesses started through the Street Child family business scheme.
Donations of any size will be very gratefully received and I will provide a progress report during and after my visit. Thank you!
