This is a project we are developing in Kenya, in Bungoma County. This project is developed together with the local NGO called Hands of Charity CBO formed by people from the community.

The Nalondo School is a leading primary and secondary school, both in Kenya and in neighbouring countries, for people with physical disabilities, and is part of the John Teka Foundation.

The primary school has 384 pupils aged 4-15 years, 152 of whom have a disability. The secondary section has 470 pupils aged 15 to 18, of whom 358 have a disability. The school also supports children in the community.

Most of the students are boarders at the school, as transportation is scarce and expensive for families. Therefore, the facilities include rooms, toilets, showers, etc.

The health care team (mostly state-subsidised) includes: a nurse, a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist and a health care technician.

Currently, neither school has running water. There is a common tank for both, with a capacity of 5,000 litres, which is not sufficient and is in disuse because the pump they used to draw the water from the well to the tank broke down. They now have to collect the water with a hand pump directly from the well, pour it into containers and transport it.

The well supplies the two schools and also the surrounding community, totalling about 2,000 people.

Inside the school, water is needed in the toilets, kitchen, laboratory, workshop, hostel, hospital dispensary and teachers' offices. At present, there are only pipes to the kitchen, but not to the rest of the facilities.

The project is to provide running water. To do this, a tank with a capacity of 10,000 litres of water needs to be purchased, the electric pump needs to be fixed, which will run on electricity, and pipes need to be built to reach all the facilities in the two schools. Solar panels will also be installed so that when the sun shines, the energy will come from these. To make the water fit for consumption, once in the tank it will undergo the usual chemical treatment in the area.

The implementation of this system will improve hygiene for students, teachers and the community. They will be able to use adapted toilets that were built and have never been used and they will also be able to use the showers. It will improve the cleanliness of the shelters, personal belongings and other facilities, which will increase the well-being of everyone and increase the safety of the sanitary facilities. In addition, the time now spent collecting, transporting and distributing water will be saved and can be used for study or more productive activities.

In short, we are talking about a very significant improvement in the quality of life, both for the students and teachers, as well as for the community.

And to make it happen, we need you.
