On 18 October, I’ll be making an ill-advised attempt to complete a 100km triathlon: a 1.5km swim in the choppy waters off Cadaqués, an 88km cycle up (and down - I’m not sure which is worse) steep gravel trails, and, because I’m a glutton for punishment, a 10.5km trail run through the hills into Girona.
A couple of years ago, Marta was diagnosed with HHT (Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia, or Rendu-Osler syndrome), a rare genetic condition that causes abnormal blood vessels to develop in the body. In Marta’s case, it has particularly affected her lungs, where she has numerous pulmonary AVMs that prevent her blood from being properly oxygenated.
She’s already had two operations to treat the largest malformations and, in the longer term, may need a lung transplant. She’s been an absolute trooper throughout all of this, so I thought the least I could do was voluntarily spend several hours cold, exhausted and questioning my life choices to raise money for HHT España - an organisation working to improve understanding, treatment and research into this rare condition.
Since signing up, Marta has been nagging me to write a will. Given my woeful swimming technique, limited cycling stamina and general lack of preparation, her lack of faith may be well placed.
But knowing I’m doing it for a good cause should hopefully get me over the finish line - even if I’m crawling by that point.
Any donation, however small, would mean a lot.
