Javier Benito Valverde (Javi or Xavi to his friends) was an extraordinary, bright person. He was also my best friend, and among many things we shared a passion for running. We ran countless kilometers and races together for more than 2 decades and one day, seeing it as something achievable but still distant, we committed to running a marathon before turning 40 years old. Unfortunately, in 2009 he was diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and after multiple treatments and a tenacious fight, the disease took him in 2014 at the age of 38.
A couple of years ago I started running again and immediately the excitement of fulfilling our challenge, now before turning 50, came back with renewed strength. So I decided that I would run the Barcelona Marathon on March 16, 2025. Javi had to participate in some way, but how? Luckily Gema, his wife, kept the cap that he used to run with lately. So you know what I'll be wearing on my head, right?
However, I felt that something else was missing. One of the best lessons that Javi left to all of us who loved him is to care about the common good and to actively participate in all kinds of solidary initiatives. With this in mind, it was easy to come to the conclusion that the best way to round off this challenge, to pay tribute to him, could only be to raise funds for research into his disease.
Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, also known by its acronym DLBCL, is the most common type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and one of those with the worst prognosis due to its aggressiveness.
The Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation has various projects that study this and other aggressive lymphomas.
