A mother carries her two-year-old son in her arms. The little boy is barely responsive to stimuli, has a very high fever and very pale conjunctivae. The nurses manage, with difficulty, to get an IV line. And to draw blood for a blood test. He has malaria and severe anemia, with a hemoglobin of 3g/dL.  He needs an urgent transfusion or he will die. His blood type is A (-). Her parents and grandmother do not have a compatible blood group. His aunt does, but she is HIV-infected.

A pregnant woman comes to the hospital early in the morning. She has been trying to give birth to her fourth child for more than a day, but for some reason she cannot. She is getting weaker and weaker and the fetus' heart is slowing down by the minute. She has to have an urgent cesarean section. The problem is that she is starting from 5 grams of hemoglobin and is at risk of dying during or after the surgery if she does not receive a transfusion. Her blood type is 0 (-) and her mother, the only one accompanying her, is 0 (+). The rest of the family will take hours to arrive from the village.

These situations, which may seem extreme, are a daily occurrence at Saint Joseph's Hospital and, unfortunately, we have very limited blood reserves.

This is because altruistic blood donations are rare in Chad. Blood is donated "when there is no other choice", when a family member needs it urgently.

In addition, a high percentage of the population is infected with HIV or suffers from hepatitis or syphilis, which reduces the number of viable candidates.

If you help us, we will be able to organize campaigns to promote altruistic donation, purchase sufficient bags and reagents for the tests, cover the costs of the pre-transfusion study and offer voluntary donors food and drink.

May 100 years of our privileged life serve to save, at least, 100 lives of those who were not as lucky as us.

Celebrate, donate....Support our challenge!
