Who are we?

We are Jamila and Alfred, a Sahrawi-Catalan couple with backgrounds in agriculture and education. Engaged in the Sahrawi cause, we are eager to contribute to improving the quality of life and food security in the Sahrawi refugee camps in Tindouf.

What will we do?

Our main objective is agricultural training, achieved by creating family gardens in the Sahrawi refugee camp in Tindouf (southern Algeria), specifically in the Bujdur camp. The reason for choosing this camp is that it has fewer projects of this kind compared to the other camps.

The project began in 2019, and despite the challenges posed by Covid, we currently have 31 functioning family gardens, each with its ups and downs, of course.

After three years without being able to travel due to the pandemic, we were finally able to do so in 2022 and see how the project had developed in our absence.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that the vast majority of the gardens were still operational, and the interest in cultivating their own food had not waned but, in fact, had grown.

Our current objective is to renew the irrigation and greenhouse materials, as the extreme desert climate has left them in poor condition in many cases. Additionally, and even more importantly, we want to continue providing training to the women participating in the project and keep building a community of small female farmers in the Bujdur camp.

We also want to hire a responsible person in the camps to coordinate the entire project and the participating families. As the project has grown, we have realized that this role is indispensable for the project to function properly.

Another important point we want to introduce this year is the planting of trees such as Moringa, which can withstand the extreme desert climate, requires very little irrigation, and all parts of it are edible, making it a superfood.

Why will we do it?

In April 2018, during a visit to the camps, we identified a lack of access to fresh food for the refugee population, as well as a high percentage of passive population. As a result, we decided to build the first family garden as an example to teach the women in the camp how to cultivate and care for their own garden. Given the success and positive reception of the initiative, we decided to expand this activity to other neighboring families who were interested.

The Sahrawi society is generally not traditionally agricultural, which is why we considered it vital to provide the population with the necessary tools to maintain their own gardens in the camps, and to enable them to use this knowledge in a hypothetical return to their original territories.

Although there are larger horticulture projects, there is a strong need for external action to ensure their proper development. For this reason, we aim to involve a large number of families so that each can self-manage their own garden once they have acquired the necessary knowledge.

When will we do it?

This project started in 2019:

April 2019: Direct contact with participating families and preparation of necessary materials.

October 2019: Construction of 21 gardens and on-site training for families to maintain them.

October 2020: Construction of 10 gardens without our direct participation due to the impossibility of traveling during the Covid pandemic.

March 2022: Trip to the camps to monitor and study the 31 installed gardens.

October 2023: Renewal of irrigation and greenhouse materials for the 31 gardens. Training and installation of new gardens, as well as tree planting in the gardens.

How can you help?

  1. Donate to the project. We need funding for the renovation materials of the old gardens, buy them for the new ones, buy trees... Any amount you can contribute is greatly appreciated.
  2. Spread the word as much as possible to reach more people.
  3. If you want to actively participate in the project, please contact us. We need all kinds of help!

Thank you so much in advance!
