At the end of the year, La Libre will have a quarter-century
25 years of bookstore and self-managed social center!
25 years being a nest: a place to ignite, meet and organize resistance in Santander, a city where these spaces are scandalously scarce.
But this anniversary comes "for hair." The changes in the neighborhood have knocked on our door: the place that hosts us went for sale suddenly.
In a city where life-long locals disappear to become impersonal businesses or tourist accommodations, moving is not an option. But not disappear, either. That’s why we’ve made an important decision: let’s buy the premises so that La Libre is, forever, a space to continue weaving community. A place where, if you haven’t already done so, you can come in one afternoon or another: to read, to listen to a talk, to meet other people or just to be there.
The target: €100,000
Yes, it gives vertigo.
The total amount is around €140,000 (€135,000 for premises and €5,000 for other expenses). Thanks to the generosity of 3 people who advanced their savings money, we were able to sign the contract and stop the sale to third parties. We have collected some direct donations, a lot of money in just a few days! And now "only" we need to return €100,000.
It’s a high number, but we trust the collective capacity to sustain what matters. This crowdfunding is an essential boost for the life of La Libre. We need you.
It’s a big number, yes. And yet, we know that what isn’t solved in one gesture is still woven among many. If we don’t get there, we’ll look for other ways to make it possible. But right now, this is the way in which all the gathered force is needed. We need you to push a lot a lot now, together.
This is not about bricks or property. It’s about taking care of a common space, ensuring its existence, protecting this corner of the city that reminds us that other realities are possible, that brings us together, that makes us feel less alone, that catches the fuse of the collective.
Every euro counts: it reduces debt, protects La Libre. All the proceeds will be used in full for purchase, until they become reality:
that La Libre stays.
25 YEARS OF COMMUNITY AND COHERENCE
More than a bookstore: we are home to various collectives of Cantabria, a space for creating banners, encounters, and ideas that take shape. A self-governed social center with hundreds of activities where money has never mediated. Where there is a free radio, a silk-screen printing workshop, a free shop, a collective library... and even now a legal advice office! Free is all the community needs it to be. And also something more difficult to measure: conversations that open up questions, links that are sustained over time, affinities that are discovered.
No wages or subsidies: we support ourselves through involvement and commitment. We organize in assembly and owe ourselves to those who make this space possible. Everyone who works in freedom does it for free, for the love of art, for the love of people and for militancy.
In the face of consumerist logic: we don’t compete on speed or discounts. We offer something slower and more humane: critical thinking, conversation, books that deserve time.
