About the NGO

The majestic Ravine of Arguineguín, the largest volcanic basin on the island of Gran Canaria is in danger because they intend to build a mega-hydroelectric plant so large that in the cavern that is intended to build to host the turbines fits the Cathedral of Las Palmas, they want to mark the landscape with 37 electric towers that reach 77 meters high, raise the entire channel from the coast to the top of the island to install the pumping pipes, making their way with 5000 kilos of dynamite per day and ultimately industrialize the entire ravine.

As it is an island where it hardly rains, they intend to desalinate sea water and raise it along 30 kilometers, at an altitude of 900 meters to keep the reservoirs full and to be able to operate reversible turbines to generate electricity. This is a crazy project that has no technical or scientific report to support it.

These works imply the destruction of the enormous biodiversity it treasures and turn the ravine into a hell for the neighbors during the 70 months of works, affecting 5 natural areas of the Natura 2000 Network and the World Biosphere Reserve of Gran Canaria.

We know from the experts that it is an obsolete and unnecessary work and that in the 21st century there are other alternatives that are more environmentally friendly and useful to fight against climate change.

We are aware that the work does not respect the Canary Islands, Spanish or European laws, because of its tremendous impact on the protected species that are home to the affected natural areas, nor from the point of view of information and participation in the process of environmental authorization of the 2,500 neighbors affected.
