In defense of human life at sea

Last January, the Government of Spain made the decision to prevent the Aita Mari rescue ship from going to sea. To defend human life at sea, we have appealed that decision through legal means. We need your help to move forward.

At the beginning of the year, the Executive blocked the navigation of the Aita Mari towards the deadliest border in the world: the Mediterranean.

This way, it keeps a rescue unit in port while hundreds of human beings are drowning in front of the indifference of the authorities. So far this year, more than 600 people have lost their lives because no politician wants to act.

Confronting this cowardly act, society has responded in the streets and squares. However, our conscience leads us to go one step further: to exhaust the legal route and demonstrate that justice is with Human Rights.

For this, we need your support because the judicial costs of an administrative appeal are high. Only together we will be able to face a process that will be long.

100% of the money collected in this crowdfunding will be used to pay legal fees.

Six months of struggle have passed and they haven't managed to break our spirit. We are going to show them that International law must be fulfilled.

With your donation you are supporting the defense of human rights and the rescue of any person at sea, regardless of their origin.

As we were refugees, let us be a refuge.

(English)

HUMANITARIAN MARITIME RESCUE – SMH was founded and operates on the basis of a firm and unwavering conviction: human rights are universal and, amongst them, the right to migrate is a fundamental right that cannot be infringed upon by borders or exclusionary policies. In the face of the climate crisis, global inequalities and conflicts that are forcing millions of people to flee their homes, we adopt an environmentalist and feminist stance, placing the defence of human life at the very centre of our work.

We carry out our work through a holistic approach that ranges from direct action at sea to social transformation and support in people’s home countries:

  • In the heart of the Central Mediterranean: Our most visible and urgent work takes place on the Aita Mari, our rescue vessel. In this maritime corridor – one of the deadliest on the planet – we provide emergency humanitarian assistance, helping people and reminding the world that inaction in the face of suffering on the high seas is unacceptable.
  • At the source and along the route: Because the root causes of forced migration must be tackled at their source, we work in close collaboration with local partner organisations. This enables us to build support networks in countries of origin, through significant projects in Manta (Ecuador), Athens (Greece) and Nairobi (Kenya), strengthening local communities and promoting alternatives for a dignified life, especially for women and girls who are victims of gender-based violence.
  • Awareness-raising and education for social transformation: Genuine solidarity stems from critical understanding. For us, it is an absolute priority to convey to society the reality faced by migrants throughout their migration journey. We place particular emphasis on those who are most vulnerable, such as women, girls and children. To this end, we carry out ongoing awareness-raising work in social settings, promoting initiatives within formal and non-formal education that foster empathy, critical awareness and a commitment to environmental and social causes.

Every contribution is not just financial support: it is a collective cry of hope, a means of keeping our ship afloat and a driving force to continue building community networks that protect the rights of all people on the move.

Join us. Because defending the right to migrate is defending humanity as a whole.
