The Mediterranean Sea has become a mass grave in plain sight. Whilst European Union policies prioritise the containment of migration and the externalisation of borders to third countries, the reality for migrants in transit is devastating. In Libya, the systematic suffocation fuelled by European agreements feeds an appalling system of arbitrary detention, extortion, torture and constant human rights violations. No one risks their life at sea unless they are fleeing from hell.
In the face of institutional inaction and the criminalisation of solidarity, the humanitarian aid ship Aita Mari continues to sail to uphold the law of the sea and the most fundamental ethical duty: to save lives.
However, our work now faces a critical financial crisis. The runaway rise in operating costs – coupled with an unsustainable increase in fuel prices – is putting the continuity of our missions at serious risk. Every euro counts towards filling the Aita Mari’s fuel tanks and securing the medical supplies, food and rescue equipment needed to provide aid on the deadliest migration route on the planet.
Why do we need your help now more than ever?
- Humanitarian emergency in Libya: The increasing persecution and hunting down of migrants on Libyan territory, indirectly funded by the EU, is forcing hundreds of men, women and children to take to the sea in makeshift boats as their only means of survival.
- Sustainability in the face of rising costs: Soaring fuel prices threaten to ground our ship. We need immediate public support to cover these additional costs and ensure that the Aita Mari can set sail and remain in the rescue zone.
- Defence of human rights: Saving lives is the first step towards global justice. We cannot allow the Mediterranean to remain a graveyard of impunity.
How will the funds be allocated?
- Fuel and navigation logistics: To ensure outbound journeys and transfers to safe ports.
- Emergency supplies: Food, drinking water, and hygiene and first-aid kits on board.
- Medical and rescue equipment: Vital healthcare for those rescued after suffering extreme situations of distress such as hypothermia, burns or near-drowning.
No human being is illegal. Solidarity is non-negotiable.
Join this challenge, share this campaign and help us fill the Aita Mari’s tanks with dignity. We’re counting on you to keep us sailing!

HUMANITARIAN MARITIME RESCUE – SMH was founded and operates on the basis of a firm and unwavering conviction: human rights are universal and, amongst them, the right to migrate is a fundamental right that cannot be infringed upon by borders or exclusionary policies. In the face of the climate crisis, global inequalities and conflicts that are forcing millions of people to flee their homes, we adopt an environmentalist and feminist stance, placing the defence of human life at the very centre of our work.
We carry out our work through a holistic approach that ranges from direct action at sea to social transformation and support in people’s home countries:
- In the heart of the Central Mediterranean: Our most visible and urgent work takes place on the Aita Mari, our rescue vessel. In this maritime corridor – one of the deadliest on the planet – we provide emergency humanitarian assistance, helping people and reminding the world that inaction in the face of suffering on the high seas is unacceptable.
- At the source and along the route: Because the root causes of forced migration must be tackled at their source, we work in close collaboration with local partner organisations. This enables us to build support networks in countries of origin, through significant projects in Manta (Ecuador), Athens (Greece) and Nairobi (Kenya), strengthening local communities and promoting alternatives for a dignified life, especially for women and girls who are victims of gender-based violence.
- Awareness-raising and education for social transformation: Genuine solidarity stems from critical understanding. For us, it is an absolute priority to convey to society the reality faced by migrants throughout their migration journey. We place particular emphasis on those who are most vulnerable, such as women, girls and children. To this end, we carry out ongoing awareness-raising work in social settings, promoting initiatives within formal and non-formal education that foster empathy, critical awareness and a commitment to environmental and social causes.
Every contribution is not just financial support: it is a collective cry of hope, a means of keeping our ship afloat and a driving force to continue building community networks that protect the rights of all people on the move.
Join us. Because defending the right to migrate is defending humanity as a whole.
