Help us save the Ibizan lizard!
Ibiza's endemic lizard is under threat due to a rapidly growing invasive snake population. With your help we can build sanctuaries to protect them.
The Ibiza wall lizard (Podarcis pityusensis) is endemic to Ibiza and Formentera. However, this species is now endangered due to an invasion of snakes that have arrived from the mainland, mainly in the trunks of imported trees. There is serious cause for concern; several recent studies indicate that this creature, which has been present on Ibiza for more than 4,000 years, could soon become extinct.
As well as controlling the number of snakes, it is also important to support the lizard population with safe spaces, or sanctuaries, where they can take refuge. With your help, we can help expand a pilot project run by Cofib and "Sargantanes o Serps" (Gen-Gob y Amics de la Terra) in Santa Eulalia to other municipalities on the island.
With €10,000, we can build about 200 sanctuaries, made from large stones with small holes allowing lizards to enter but not snakes. These shelters would be installed in strategically selected hotel gardens and pedestrian areas, creating a safer environment where the lizards can take refuge and breed.
This project will be carried out in coordination with Cofib (Consorci de Recuperació de la Fauna de les Illes Balears) and "Sargantanes o Serps", made up of the environmental groups GEN-GOB & Amics de la Terra.
