Once a year I put my mind and my body through a harsh challenge that will test my physical and mental limits. This year that challenge will be the Ironman 70.3 of Calella (Barcelona). The challenge consists of swimming 1.9km, riding a bike for 90km, and then running a half marathon to finish up. Apart from putting myself through this temporary misery, I want to raise money for sick children as a member of the 'Make a Wish' foundation.
To put the distances into perspective, let me create the following mental images to illustrate:
Swimming 1.9km is like swimming the length of the Empire State Building (380m) 5 times.
Riding the bike for 90km is like circling central park 9 times in a row.
Running a half marathon (21.0975km) is like going from Yonkers to Soho, which basically means crossing the entire Island of Manhattan.
It is going to be the hardest athletic challenge I ever had to do in my life and I am not doing it alone. I am currently receiving the support of many people, friends, family, and co-workers. Apart from that, I am also seeing that there are some companies out there that support me in my endeavor, such as ‘Vertex Global Sports’, ‘It’s Only Love’ Activewear, ‘Diaghorras’, and last but certainly not least the ‘Make A Wish’ foundation.
I have decided to engage with the Make A Wish foundation and will raise funds for the cause. I have worked with the foundation in the past, by raising funds for the Garmin Triathlon in 2013 and 2014 and I know how lovely the people are that make the sick children’s wishes come true.
My goal will be to finish the Ironman 70.3 of Barcelona in under 6 hours. This means that I am going to suffer a lot. I will go through hours of training and lots of pain. But pain is necessary to understand what these children must go through. .
Helping children that may have been sick for large parts of their childhood and maybe have to live with a disease until the end of their lives, makes me wonder whether they had a chance to live a childhood like other children did. I don’t think so. They have to go through pain and suffering that no child should go through.
Helping these children is my mission and with your help, we can enrich the lives of some children and let them live their childhoods.
P.S.: I have chosen the Lakers Make A Wish example, because it made me cry a little bit :-)
