Welcome to Quique’s challenge, a future without Sarcomas!

Quique is a 14-year-old teenager who two years ago was diagnosed with alveolar sarcoma, a type of cancer that is uncommon in this age group.

This year, for his birthday, after a relapse of the disease, his family wanted to give him a special gift, to share together the experience, after finishing his second treatment, of making a pilgrimage to Santiago this summer.

This is the origin of El Sello de Quique, an initiative supported by Fundación IN, Jóvenes contra el cáncer, which seeks to make us reflect on the difficulties and challenges that life presents us with and how to overcome them by exploring our limits.

The initiative has as its central axis the Camino de Santiago of Quique, who has been joined by a group of 50 family members and friends, who will help him to achieve the challenge he has set himself, to raise €100,000 for research into new treatments for childhood sarcomas, in a clinical trial at the Hospital de La Paz, pioneer in the world, led by Dr. Antonio Pérez Martínez, called CAR4SAR and whose donation will be made through a collaboration agreement through Fundación Cris contra el cáncer.

Dr. Antonio Pérez's team has developed CAR-T cells with a very particular detector, called NKG2D, which allows them to find a wide variety of different tumor cells. They are using these CAR-T-NKG2D cells in a wide variety of tumors, with great success, and the team's previous data show that this therapy can be very beneficial in the case of sarcomas. They have therefore decided to take the next step and bring this therapy to sarcoma patients through a clinical trial. In this Phase I trial (in which the best dose and safety for patients is being studied), 18 children with sarcomas in advanced stages of their disease will participate.

The trial therapy is done with a CAR-T that is designed and developed by Dr. Perez's own team, which is why it is called an academic CAR-T. In addition, since children with advanced sarcomas often have received many previous therapies, it is better to use T-lymphocytes from a donor, rather than using the child's own, whose immune system may not function properly. These are called allogenic CAR-Ts.

For all these reasons, this novel trial is very special, as it is the first allogenic, academic CAR-T in pediatric solid tumors. This trial could be a strong step forward in changing the way we treat advanced childhood sarcomas, in a safer, more effective, and more efficient way, more safely, effectively and with fewer long-term side effects.

Quique's Challenge proposes to look within ourselves and overcome that challenge we all carry inside, and that is why anyone can also support Quique in his project, setting their own goal. Quique has stamps to certify all kinds of challenges (as a nod to the pilgrim's credential) ... run a marathon, climb a mountain, surf a wave, read for hours ... just look for sponsors in our environment to sponsor the challenge (family, friends, colleagues) thus raising funds through our crowdfunding platforms.

HOW CAN I CREATE A CHALLENGE TO SUPPORT QUIQUE?

You can create a challenge by looking for the instructions in the infographic, where the whole process is explained. The infographic is available through the QR that appears in the information brochures of the initiative, posters and flyers made for the project, posted in the bio of the Instagram profile, and in the link El Sello de Quique | Fundación IN (fundacionin.org).

This project is supported by "Fundación Iñaki Nogueroles, jóvenes contra el cáncer" which began its journey in January 2010, after the death of Iñaki (Quique's uncle) due to Hodgkin's Lymphoma and started from the idea of celebrating his 25th birthday, although it was not until May 2011 when it was officially registered as a foundation.

The aim of the foundation is to achieve the recognition of young people with cancer as a group with specific medical and assistance needs as the main reason for its activity.

In addition, the foundation supports projects that can improve the quality of life of young patients of today and tomorrow, from the energy and solidarity of young people.

Supporting Quique from the Foundation to empower himself in his disease and be an example of overcoming and hope for other patients in his situation is the objective of this project and make visible the image of young people and cancer, the unique challenges they face and the approach to the disease through a full life based on self-esteem, nutrition and physical exercise as part of a healthy life.
