Tália is a 14-year-old girl with Mitochondrial Disease. Mitochondrial Disease is a result of failure in a person’s mitochondria. Mitochondria are like tiny powerhouses in our cells, and they convert food into energy. They are responsible for creating up to 90% of the energy that any human being needs to grow and survive. Because mitochondria are in all our vital organs, the effects can be seen in multiple systems leading to damage to cells, brain, heart, skeletal muscles, respiratory system and endocrine systems. The disease is progressive and there is no cure at present.
In Tália’s case, the disease has also presented with multiple traits similar to Autism Spectrum Disorder with a percentage of reduced mobility.

Communication is one of the key things Tália is working on. Her verbal communication is still not developed, but she can use basic keywords. In addition to this she is learning to use sign language and a communicator that she has on her tablet to talk to people. When she cannot make herself understood she can become frustrated and it is difficult to calm her down. A dog would make a great companion for Tália, as the barrier to communication makes it hard for her to express herself and feel understood.
Tália likes dogs, in the evaluation we saw how she liked to pet and feed them. We were taking a walk with one of our dogs and we saw how, despite being uncomfortable with the touch of the leash, she did not let go of it at any time. Tália is loving and caring - having a dog by her side will help her to be more independent and give her a sense of purpose.
Tália is sensitive to loud noises and lights, these stimuli make her uncomfortable - shopping centres, supermarkets, restaurants can be too much for her and give her an anxiety attack.
She doesn’t like change and does not like leaving the house. Her assistance dog would be a motivation to go out more and be able to do things as a family.
Tália finds it hard to sleep alone. She has not slept a whole night on her own in many years.
An assistance dog could give her that security she needs at night.
Tália does not associate with people her age, however, when she is with children she always wants to be one of the group. A dog is a point of union with people her age. It will accompany her and help her in the process of making friends. Because of Tália’s disease, her energy levels are low so often she cannot join in many activities with other children - this can be lonely. Tália has two older sisters studying in higher education - she suffers from separation anxiety every time they leave home. Having a dog by her side would help.
In aspects of reduced mobility, Tália has difficulty with fine motor skills - pressing buttons, opening and closing heavy doors, undressing .. We will train her dog to support her in day-to-day tasks that increase her autonomy.
Tália craves independence but she does not understand many dangers, like that of crossing roads. An assistance dog will help her to work towards this goal of independence.

A motivated person has no limits and Tália loves the company of our furry friends, the help of an assistance dog can make a difference to her future.
We consider that an Assistance Dog would be invaluable for a family that seeks to give its daughter every opportunity, becoming one of the team, a companion that accompanies them on a day-to-day basis and helps them overcome each new challenge.
