Area 49 of Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, is where the Amai Maria residence for young secondary school and university students, managed by the missionaries of Mary Mediator, is located.

The Amai Maria residence offers 70 Malawian girls the opportunity to continue their secondary and university studies in the country's capital. Thanks to the residence these girls have the opportunity to continue their education in a country like Malawi, where it is not easy for women to continue their secondary and university studies.

Every day the students have to travel from the Amai María residence to the different schools and universities they attend, spread over different Areas (neighborhoods) of the city. Public transport in Lilongwe is very precarious and is carried out in "Matolas" (vans with an open cabin) or private "MiniVans" (Minibuses), always very crowded with people. In fact, MiniVans and Matolas do not have fixed schedules, as they do not start the journey/route until all the seats are occupied, and can stop anywhere waiting to have enough passengers to make the trip profitable. Harassment of women is common in Lilongwe's shared transport.

Equipping the residence of young students Amai Maria in Area 49  with its own MiniVan, would provide these students a safer journey to their respective schools without having to share the vehicle, avoiding not only the harassment that the students suffer in the shared MiniBuses but also it would make possible to adapt travel times to their school hours, which would reduce school absenteeism among students.

In addition, the MiniVan of Area 49 would also serve other centers that the missionaries have in Malawi: the Mlale hospital and the Chezi orphanage. None of these centers has a similar vehicle, so it would be very useful to transport  girls, boys or patients between the different centers that the Missionaries manage in Malawi.

The #miniVAN_Area49 project is an initiative of Nomadas Motorhome company, in collaboration with the Esteban Vigil Foundation and the Operación Pangono Pangono Association.
