When I turned 40, I was overweight, prediabetic and would have been unable to jog around a bloc at turtle speed. I made the decision to make a fundamental change and started training with the goal to be able to complete a 5k race - alive. Thanks to the unconditional support of my husband and two dear friends, I was able to reach this goal only 3 months later.
But we did not stop there. 18 months after "getting off the sofa", the four of us together crossed the finishline of our first marathon and we continued motivating eachother to participate in challenges of increasing difficulty. Last year, I completed a shortened version of a 70.3 and challenged myself to complete a real IronMan 70.3 (aka a "half" IronMan or "middle distance" triathlon). The event was planned for June and postponed - for obvious reasons - to September. Only 12 days ahead of the new date, it was cancelled and we asked to be transferred to the last opportunity for the year: November 8.
Today, just 3 weeks before the event - and again for obvious reasons - we have received yet another cancellation email. But I will not let that stand in my way of completing my 2020 challenge. Today is also International Breast Cancer day and I am taking this as a sign to launch my personal #Coronachallenge to support cancer research.
Cancer, and particularly Breast Cancer, has been part of the life of too many close family members of mine: a grandmother, all my aunts (3 of them), my mother... and also 3 of my dearest friends: all of them have faced this difficult battle, putting their endurance and perseverance to the hardest of trials.
I want to dedicate each of the 1.900m of swim, 90km of cycle and 21km of run to all of them and hope you will support my initiative by contributing to Fundación VHIO, a foundation that promotes and develops research towards improved prevention, early stage diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Vall Hebron Institute of Oncology is based in Barcelona, Spain and at the same time an internationally reknown research center.

La Fundación VHIO promueve y desarrolla la investigación de excelencia para mejorar la prevención, el diagnóstico precoz y el tratamiento del cáncer.
Para alcanzar este objetivo, centra su estrategia en el desarrollo de innovadores programas de investigación en las áreas clínica, básica y traslacional, tomando como modelo los centros de investigación oncológica de referencia internacional.

Desde su creación y constitución, el VHIO ha tenido el apoyo de fondos privados y públicos. La iniciativa privada es una fuente de ingresos clave, ya sea mediante un apoyo competitivo o proyectos filantrópicos.
VHIO es un centro CERCA que está ubicado dentro del Campus Valle de Hebrón y que forma parte del consorcio Cancer Core Europe, que engloba los 6 centros de excelencia de investigación en cáncer de Europa.

Vielen Dank für die Spende! Ich habe eine Oma und eine Tante an Brustkrebs verloren. Meine Mutter und meine anderen beiden Tanten (=alle Frauen eine "Etage" über mir) sind Brustkrebs-"Survivors"... Beide Patentanten meiner Kinder: Brustkrebs. Eine meiner Schulfreundinnen kämpft gerade mit ihrem und mein kleiner Cousin hat Hodgkin. Auf Santis Seite der Familie ist es nicht ganz so krass, aber eine Oma und eine Tante hatten auch Brustkrebs - bei beiden ist es glimpflich ausgegangen. Vivi geht es hoffentlich weiterhin gut 🤞
